Inflicting Max-imum damage

Max Payne 3
A barrel of laughs ... Bullet Time gets an upgrade
Max Payne 3 (Xbox/PS3/PC, £34.99 - £39.99)

CLOSE to death and with only a couple of rounds left in my revolver, I desperately dive over an office desk as time slows to a crawl and the colour bleeds out of my surroundings.

I slowly bring up my sights mid-air to aim at the final thug blasting me with a shotgun and with my last breath I pull the trigger, landing a single shot to take him out and save my bacon in the process.

An unashamedly cinematic third-person shooter, Max Payne 3 is full of moments like these that leave you feeling like the hero in your very own action movie.

Forced to abandon New York, Max is now a bodyguard for a wealthy Brazilian family in the city of Sao Paulo. When things take a turn for the worse, a desperate rescue mission becomes a bid for personal redemption.

Gameplay is familiar Max Payne territory - you'll still run and gun down bad guys while dodging in slow motion around gritty environments.

The mechanics are still solid but it's this familiarity that is the biggest flaw in the game. With the bread and butter gunplay of the previous games remaining much the same, fans looking for a significant overhaul will probably be disappointed.

However, it's the pacing and tone which make Max Payne 3 more than the sum of its parts.

Rockstar have put other developers to shame with an attention to story that is rarely seen in shooters.

Its tightly-woven plot features the kind of twists and set pieces that make a day with John McClane look like a tea party at the village fete.

Feel it in your chest ... Max Payne 3 in action
Other than after a post-death restart, loading screens are virtually non-existent, with cut-scenes transitioning directly into gameplay to create a practically seamless experience. Don't be surprised if you find yourself struggling to put down the controller.

The multiplayer portion is a fairly engaging offering that, while not the main draw of the title, is a decent attempt to transplant the feel of the series online.

Bullet Time, rather than breaking the game, is well implemented. Jump into slow motion and so too will any other players in your line of sight, helping to even up the odds.

While there's certainly rampant fun to be had in Team Deathmatch, the Gang Wars mode is what will really keep people coming back.

With a loose story playing out over the course of five rounds, players must work together to complete various objectives with the narrative changing according to the result of each clash.

Max Payne 3 might not stray much from the well-established formula of its predecessors, but Rockstar continue to set the benchmark in third-person action games. A must-buy.

First look at FIFA 13 ... It’s going to get Messi

Barcelona ace Messi in game
Inspiring player ... Barcelona ace Messi in game
FANS’ favourite footie game FIFA has undergone its most radical overhaul yet — with Barcelona hit man Lionel Messi its inspiration.

Despite being the frontman for bitter rivals Pro Evo, the Argentine's silky skills have nevertheless sparked a host of innovations in the explosively popular franchise’s forthcoming 13th instalment.

And the five most important improvements are below.

Attacking Intelligence gives players the most sophisticated artificial intelligence ever achieved.

They have the ability to analyse space, work harder and smarter to break down the defence, and think two plays ahead.

Complete Dribbling enables players to face their opponent and use precise dribble touches combined with true 360° mobility with the ball, so it’s easier to be more creative and dangerous in one on one opportunities.

First Touch Control transforms the way players control the ball, eliminating near-perfect touch for every player on the pitch, and creating more opportunities for defenders to win back possession.

Tactical Free Kicks provides the tools to create dangerous and unpredictable free kicks.

And the updated Player Impact Engine expands physical play from just collisions to off-the-ball battles between players.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Block-buster ... Black Ops II looks every bit the hit

The announcement of Black Ops II was hardly a surprise, was it?

Does this make Mario the Andy Murray of the gaming world?

Mario Tennis Open
Back-handed compliment ... Mario Tennis Open is good, but not great.
Mario Tennis Open (3DS, £29.99)
There’s a fairly sound theory that you can drop Mario and his gang into most any genre of game and he’ll elevate it to semi-greatness.
That’s largely true and almost the case with Mario’s first tennis outing on the 3DS.
All the components are here, arcing shots, fireball effects, incredible smashes, brilliant characters and even smacking your opponents with the ball so they go reeling backwards.
It’s tennis on Mario steroids. It looks lovely and plays a nice wee game with tight controls that rely on a little bit of touchscreen shenanigans but not too much.
The problem Mario Tennis runs into is the unlockable and challenge curve. The first few tournaments are ridiculously easy. That may be great for young kids, but the game expects you to go through the entire structure with all eight characters and after you’ve slogged away through eight tournaments with a couple you won’t be bothered doing it with anyone else.
There is a small incentive, and it’s very small. Every time you win a match with a different character you win a new piece of outfit for your Mii, whether it’s wristbands, trainers or a top.
But there’s little difference between them and it soon becomes a bit ‘who cares’. The balancing-act games have to reward you enough to keep plugging away is an exact science. Games like Call Of Duty and Everybody’s Golf on the Vita do it brilliantly, Mario tennis doesn’t.
On top of that there are a couple of annoying inclusions. You can’t pause mid-rally, so if your train pulls in then you’re just going to have to concede the point. Also, if you switch the annoying gyro settings off mid-game, then you have to redo it every game. Small things but they add up.
It’s a shame, because with a properly challenging structure and slightly more varied tournaments and competitions this could have been a great game, with hours of replayability.
As such it’s slightly above average. Capable of going to a final but not going all the way...in other words, Andy Murray.
