According to The Tennessean, Reese Witherspoon,
36, accompanied her parents to a Davidson County courtroom Friday to
attend "an emergency hearing on whether her father should be placed in a
conservatorship."
Earlier this week, the actress' mother, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Witherspoon filed court documents accusing her husband, Dr. John Witherspoon, of bigamy.
Though the couple separated in 1996, according to the affidavit,
Betty and John "are in regular contact and speak together many times per
week. They attend family functions together, including their daughter's
wedding in California."
Explaining she's still in love with her husband, Betty also asserts
she believes John is struggling with early onset dementia. Because of
his poor mental health, she believes his January 14 marriage to Tricianne Taylor
should be annulled. "When I confronted my husband, he said he didn't
know who Tricianne Taylor was and that he did not remember getting
married," Betty stated in the affidavit.
At this time, Davidson County Seventh Circuit Court Judge Randy
Kennedy's decision regarding John's capacity to care for himself remains
unknown; the judge closed Friday's proceedings to the public and has
sealed the court record.
Speaking to the judge, Andra Hendrick, an attorney
for the Witherspoon family, asserted that the conservatorship case "has
zero to do with Reese Witherspoon's career," and instead is about
helping her mother look after her marriage and the family's finances.
"This is a daughter who wants to help her parents, particularly her father," Hendrick explained.
Reese is currently expecting her first child with husband of one year, Jim Toth; she and ex-husband Ryan Phillippe share custody of Ava, 12, and Deacon, 8.
