PAFFE NEWS ... Gary Paffett won from pole position |
GARY PAFFETT coasted to victory in the third round of the DTM Championship at
Brands Hatch with a commanding lead over Bruno Spengler.
The 31-year-old HWA Mercedes driver started the race on pole position and
recovered from a slow start to hold his lead over the gruelling 97-lap race.
Paffett, who is also a test driver for the McLaren Formula One team, was cheered on at the Kent circuit by Jenson Button.
The win was Paffett’s 19th of his DTM career he but admitted afterwards that winning on home soil was extra special, as he opened up a 25-point lead at the top of the drivers’ championship.
Paffett, who has now won two and finished second once in the opening three races this season, said:
“It is my first win in DTM here, which is very special as I learned to race cars here.
“It was not easy because Bruno was always there to pick up on any mistakes that I made.
“I did not have a great start, but managed to stay ahead of Bruno and managed to build up a lead until the pit-stops.
“We were in control but 97 laps around here is difficult. You don’t have time to relax. You have to stay in your rhythm, but it is difficult to keep your concentration.”
Paffett is now looking to take his excellent form into the next race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria where he will look to increase his lead in the championship.
He added: “We have had a sensational start to the year. Two wins and a second.
“We have had a great start and have to keep trying to score points and try to win another race.”
Former F1 drivers David Coulthard finished in 15th while Ralf Schumacher was in 19th. Brit Andy Priaulx was forced to retire early in his RBM BMW.
