Frocky horror ... glittery Kate Upton |
HOLLYWOOD A-listers turned up in their droves for the fashion event of the
year last night.
But not all of the celebrities got it right on the red carpet at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Costume Institute Gala.
Glitter, feathers and some dodgy patterns were worked the wrong way by some of
the stars.
Kate Upton was the pick of the fashion misses. The model — who is
reported to have paid over £15,000 for a ticket — looked shiny
and frumpy in a spangly frock with an unflatteringly high neck line.
Lana Del Rey looked ready to do battle in a floor-length chainmail-inspired
gown by designer Joseph Alturzarra. The Blue Jeans singer then also vamped
it up with dark lippy and a black cape.
Meanwhile I Am Sam actress Dakota Fanning opted for pale lilac that washed her
out and seemed to have been crafted out of an old curtain. The 18-year-old
gave a nod to her youth with a pastel pink hair clip.

Fashion faux-pas ... Lana Del Ray and Dakota Fanning |
Leighton Meester plumped for a gold filigree pattered lace gown with sheer and
lace cute sleeves. The Gossip Girl star looked stunning in the
figure-hugging top half of the frock, but the giant ruffles around the hem
gave the dress a disjointed feel.

Gold and green go wrong ... Leighton Meester and Dianna Agron |
Emerald green suited Dianna Agron – but the low-cut gown was unstructured and
did little to show off the Glee star’s usually killer curves.

Sofia Vargara sparkled in a Marchesa silver lace column dress – but the frills
around the front oozed “fussy” rather than elegance.

Mistake ... stiff Sofia Vargara and feathery Diane Kruger |
Could Diane Kruger be pregnant? Her ultra-violet gown is unflattering if not,
and the bizarre ostriche feathers on the bottom were over the top and
ill-matched. The Troy actress accessorised with an oversized purple pendant,
a watch worn half-way up her arm and added even more colour with a bright
pink clutch.
Model Candice Swanepoel almost got it right in an electric blue and navy low
back number that showed off her svelte curves. But the zip and mesh strips
transformed the dress from trendy to tacky.

Dressed to frill ..? Candice Swanepoel, right, and Rooney Mara |
Rooney Mara gave a nod towards the Victorian era in her Givenchy lace
one-shouldered number. But the sheer skirt left The Girl With the Dragon
Tattoo star looking slightly undressed.
Brooke Shields arrived leaning on a walking stick and opted for a beautifully
cut one-shouldered dress that gathered on her hip – but the Pretty Baby
actress would have been better off sticking to a block colour rather than
the bizarre pattern.

Dodgy patterns ... Brooke Shields and Jamie King |
Jamie King opted for a red-hot scarlet satin gown – a colour which suited her
dewy complexion. But the neck line was nothing special and her bold black
and white clutch bag did not suit the glamorous occasion.

Fashion flops ... MIA and Donatella Versace |
MIA showed off a pair of killer pins – but unfortunately it was while wearing
a shiny floral print skirt suit that looked straight out of the ‘80s.
Fashionista Donatella Versace looked stiff and uncomfortable in a gold
sequined dress with lattice front panelling. She veered towards metallic
overload by accessorising with a shiny gold clutch, a bling ring – and of
course her platinum locks.
